What Do I Spend?
In Development
What Do I Spend? is currently in development and not yet available on Google Play. Support opens fully at release — but feedback and questions are welcome now.
Getting started
What Do I Spend? will be installable from Google Play at release; a store button will appear on its page here the moment the listing is real. The app is offline-first: its core features work without a connection.
- One timeline merging notifications, receipts, imports and manual entries
- On-device receipt OCR
- Opt-in, per-app transaction-notification capture
- Open Banking architecture (mock provider today, honestly labelled)
Permissions
Spend asks only for what its features need, and works sensibly if you decline. To review or change grants: Android Settings → Apps → Spend → Permissions.
- Camera: Scans paper receipts. Text recognition runs on the device via ML Kit.
- Notification access (optional): Reads transaction notifications from apps you explicitly select, to log spending automatically. Granted separately in system settings.
- Internet: Reserved for the Open Banking connection layer. The current build ships a working mock provider; no live bank connection exists yet.
- Biometrics: Locks the app behind your fingerprint or face unlock.
Common problems
The app is misbehaving or running slowly
- Swipe the app away from Recents and reopen it.
- Check Google Play for an update.
- Clear the app's cache (Android Settings → Apps → Spend → Storage → Clear cache) — this keeps your data.
Where is my data, and how do I delete it?
Financial records stay on the device until you delete them. Delete entries in the app, or clear the app's storage in Android settings to remove everything. Full details are on the Spend privacy page.
Does it really work offline?
Yes — the core of Spend is built to work with no signal at all. Anything that does use the network is listed on the privacy page, and none of it is required for everyday use.
Battery and performance tips
Spendavoids background work beyond what its features need. If Android's battery optimisation interferes with reminders or timers, exempt the app in Android Settings → Battery → Battery optimisation.
Accessibility
- Spending totals announced as text, never colour-coded alone
- Biometric lock with device-credential fallback
Accessibility problems are treated as bugs — reports are very welcome.
